The concept is based on a Segway. This not only provides the necessary performance but also supports the balance distribution of the stretcher. For the wheels to come up the stairs, they are equipped with a fixed but flexible structure instead of tyres filled with air. A single rescuer can also transport a heavy person up to 6 floors with the help of the patient stretcher. In the process we discovered that it makes sense to have at least one paramedic always operating the stretcher to ensure safety.
In the process of research, we interviewed both the Brazilian Rescue Service SAMU and the local fire brigade. It turned out that there are many high-rise buildings without elevators which cause a big problem for the rescue services in Sao Paulo. Up to four rescue workers are needed to transport a single patient. This course especially for women often back problems.
