In recent years, floods have become increasingly frequent and violent. These disasters caused by climate change will increasingly effect the population in poorer countries, where, among other things, the flood protection infrastructure has not been developed. In particular, countries close to the equator are characterized by heavy rainfall such as the monsoon. In these mostly poor countries, the rescue infrastructure is also poorly developed, so that many of those who are effected cannot rely on help and are often stuck on their roofs for days.
This design provides a cost-effective, simple and practical solution that allows flood victims to bring themselves to safety. People who live in a flood-prone region can buy Float at a low price and stow it in a space-saving way at home. Alternatively, it can be provided by rescuers before floods are announced. A possible second use is the outdoor area: Due to its low weight and compact size, it can easily be taken on expeditions and used to cross rivers or lakes and transport material.
Designed is a floating device that can be rolled up to save space. It consists of a single polypropylene plate that folds into the Float by pulling a rope. This allows the Float to be activated in one easy step. The form is cut out of a 2,5 mm polypropylene plate in a punching process were living hinges are pressed in at the same time. Eyelets are attached to the edges of the plate through which the rope runs. In addition, a paddle consisting of a wooden rod and a folded polypropylene shovel is supplied.
